A Well-Rounded Approach to Client Satisfaction
The Dressel Financial Group of UBS Has a Passion for Helping Clients

Some people choose to become financial advisors because they are fascinated with the intricacies of the investment world. Others want to have a hand in making portfolios grow. And some want to build relationships and have an impact on their clients’ lives.

There are the select few who accomplish all this and more, advisors like Michael Dressel, Senior Vice President-Investments of the Dressel Financial Group of UBS. He realizes how much there is to know about managing wealth and how much he can do to help his clients.

“The thing to know about me is that, first and foremost, I am very passionate about creating a positive client experience,” Dressel says. “My group has a combined total of 95 years working in this industry. With this comes plenty of insight and understanding. We offer a disciplined investment approach that incorporates fundamental quantitative and technical analysis.”

The experience starts with simply sitting down and talking with clients. “When we first discuss your financial future, we consider all the information pertinent to your situation,” Dressel adds. “We look at things like your assets and liabilities, stage in life, attitude toward risk, investment horizon, cash flow requirements and ongoing personal needs.” Dressel and his team then thoughtfully craft a financial plan and make modifications as the market outlook or his client’s situation changes.

It’s all part of the exceptional service offered by the group. Kathleen Waldman and Virginia Kase are Dressel’s long-term associates. “Those two pretty much run everything, from client communications to day-to-day operations,” he says. “I handle the major financial issues and decisions.”

Dressel’s relationship with UBS, one of the largest wealth managers in the world, provides the resources, products and solutions to address his clients’ needs and help achieve their goals. “UBS offers exceptional access to a range of global resources and financial tools,” he says. “The firm is very supportive and it gives me an excellent platform to execute.

“Doing this – working with people, helping them – is my passion. I get to go to work and talk to people who are successful in their fields. Every day is a learning experience. This is what makes me tick – helping to protect and grow wealth through all phases of our clients’ lives. It all comes down to helping families and individuals realize their financial goals.”

Dynamic Financial Markets. Responsive Solutions.
Rogers & Company’s Unique Adaptive Portfolio Management for High-Net-Worth Clients

Technology, globalization and “flash” market moves, combined, have changed the core structure of investing. So how does one confidently make financial choices in a chaotic and rapidly changing environment?
For many high-net-worth individuals and families around the world, the answer is found in the adaptive portfolio management approach pioneered by Rogers & Company

Wealth Management. A 30-year-old independent wealth advisory firm in St. Louis, MO, Rogers & Company has a heritage as a wealth management innovator. In fact, the firm’s president, Carol L. Rogers, MBA, CPWA, helped develop E.F. Hutton’s then revolutionary financial planning approach. With multigenerational client relationships, the firm carries on this tradition today in award-winning fashion.

“Investing has fundamentally changed,” observes Rogers. “Traditional approaches alone are no longer effective. Without additional strategies that adapt to evolving markets, risk and volatility may be higher while potential returns may potentially be decreased. Investors need to understand this.”

Rogers and her team always start by distilling complex facts and figures into straightforward, cohesive advice, using high-tech tools to simplify decision making. Clients benefit from a team approach that combines collective knowledge and seasoned experience with access to outside experts in key areas of financial planning and advanced wealth management.

Omar R. Qureshi, CIMA, CPWA, a partner in the firm, helps to design and manage custom client portfolios. Qureshi says the firm’s commitment to customization improves its ability to rapidly adapt to changing conditions in order to reduce risk or improve potential results. “Often, we’ve been able to turn volatility into opportunity, rather than viewing it as something to be avoided,” he says.
Idealistic Dreams Tested With Realistic Scenarios Every new client receives a comprehensive financial plan, including strategies and action steps that seek to bring the client’s goals and dreams to life.

“Instead of just assuming what a client’s assets might do over time based on historical averages, we stress-test every plan against thousands of possible variations of the future, including severe market crashes, with the goal of creating a plan that can realistically survive almost any contingency,” Qureshi says.

“At Rogers & Company, you provide the dreams,” Rogers says. “We’ll provide the confidence to pursue them.”

Two Generations, One Clear Commitment – The McAtee Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors Understands People and Their Money

It’s one thing to know money, finance and investing. It’s quite another to know people – their wants, needs, fears, hopes and dreams. It’s Jim McAtee’s job to know both. And he takes that job very seriously.

With 42 years in the financial advisory business, McAtee has helped a multitude of people and has overseen an immense amount of client assets. As Managing Director – Investments of The McAtee Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, he uses his insight and experience to help clients succeed with their financial goals.

But he doesn’t do it alone. His son Kevin, Associate Vice President – Investments, has been part of the group for 11 years, sharing an impressive body of knowledge. Two generations of McAtees, along with an exceptional support staff, form a team that’s uniquely qualified to serve the varying needs of a multigenerational client base. McAtee Financial Group guides its clients, and in some cases, their children and grandchildren, every step of the way, from wealth accumulation to conservation to distribution.

Listening – It Just Makes Sense

“Clients appreciate our reliable, commonsense approach,” says Jim. “We try to keep relationships comfortable and relaxed. We don’t offer advice until we’ve listened. Then we develop finely tuned strategies specific to the client’s situation. Every day our team has opportunities to help people in some way, and we don’t want to miss those opportunities.”

The group is backed by the finest resources in the industry. Wells Fargo Advisors offers easy access to a wide array of research and information, and the McAtees put it to good use for their clients, creating effective investment plans. “When it comes to products and resources, Wells Fargo & Company really has a deep bench,” says Kevin. “They give us everything we need to be valuable to our clients.”

Where Advisors Go for Advice

A former Marine, Jim transferred his leadership skills to the financial world, where, in addition to his role as an advisor, he has worked in branch and marketing management. Even 10 years later, this advisor to advisors gets calls from former colleagues seeking guidance.

“Our experience, resources and holistic point of view make a big difference in the way we do things, and that can translate into a big difference for our clients as well,” says Kevin. “It’s a very complicated world out there. Things change every day. Our strength is our ability to understand our clients and respond accordingly to whatever comes up.”

Financial Strategies for a Comfortable Retirement

Are you confident you will reach your financial objective by the time you retire? Will you be able to afford nursing home care, if necessary? Are your current advisors communicating and cooperating, or are they working at cross-purposes? Unfortunately, many people discover too late in life that their advisors have implemented conflicting strategies. Not so at Voss Financial Services, Inc.

“My number one goal is to help people avoid worrying about their retirement so much and create independence,” says President Douglas J. Voss of the St. Louis-based financial services company. “I try to protect clients from themselves. Play it safe and protect your principal.”

From investment strategies to tax strategies, insurance needs and much more, Voss Financial specializes in helping retirees and individuals who are approaching retirement make sense of, and grow, their assets in a way that suits their current circumstances and future goals. Voss says many people who come to him for the first time are overly invested in areas that are too volatile for their stage of life.

“Most financial professionals are very aggressive with their clients’ money,” Voss says. “One thing that separates us from other financial professionals is that we believe in a balance between principal preservation and taking advantage of the market. When there are corrections in the market, my phone does not ring off the wall, because our clients know that we are looking out for them and have them positioned accordingly.”

After 25 years in business, Voss Financial Services enjoys extremely low client turnover. Many of the firm’s clients are federal employees, whose respective agencies carefully research and vet financial advisors before allowing them to conduct retirement seminars. Voss Financial takes pride in providing the highest level of personal attention possible, taking calls from clients regularly and returning calls promptly. A Five Star Wealth Manager in 2011, Voss is ranked among the top 5 percent of all the financial service companies in St. Louis.

“A lot of people don’t have a good idea of where they are going to be, financially, when they retire,” he says. “Our goal is to help them retire in comfort, maintain their principal and earn a monthly income along the way.”

Sterling Financial Advisors Provides Extraordinary Client Service

Sterling Financial Advisors’ motto, “Plan for Tomorrow, Live for Today,” is a strategy for helping clients prepare for the future while living a full life in the present.

Using this approach, the firm provides excellent portfolio development advice that recognizes the need for a balanced life. While a common objective is financial independence in retirement, the advisors at Sterling Financial Advisors (SFA) recognize clients want to celebrate milestones, take vacations and pay for education. With “Plan for Tomorrow, Live for Today,” the focus is the client’s current life in addition to retirement ahead.

Karen Evans, CFP®, Dale Lindhorst, CPA, CFP® and Pamela Zell, CFP® are the principals of Sterling Financial Advisors, an independent firm committed to the best possible service, and the freedom to provide that service. “There’s no corporate hierarchy here. Everything is client-goal-driven. Nothing is product-driven,” Zell says. “Our clients are important and valued, and our time is their time.”

People’s needs, objectives and acceptance of investment risk vary widely. Evans, Lindhorst and Zell work individually with clients, educating, making recommendations, finding the right solutions and helping to develop comfort with financial decisions. “We offer a safe forum for them to discuss their plans both as individuals and as a couple,” Evans says. “We seek solutions to satisfy all of the objectives. It’s important that our clients know that we are on their team and all working towards achieving the same goals.”

Every portfolio is a custom creation. There are no “cookie-cutter” models. Investment instruments might include securities, mutual funds, bonds, exchange-traded funds, annuities and alternative investments. “We tailor portfolios to the clients, their personalities and their interests,” says Lindhorst. “We also manage assets within 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as employer-issued stock options and restricted stock.”

At SFA, community service runs in tandem with client care. Evans, Lindhorst and Zell hold board positions with numerous charitable organizations, and strongly support local churches and schools.

Sterling Financial Advisors provides a welcoming office environment, fee-based financial advice and strong client relationships with regular reviews. “We want to see clients at least twice a year,” Evans says, “to help them stay on track and reach their goals.”

A Solution for Plan Advisors in a Changing Regulatory Landscape

Helping retirement plan participants achieve their goals has never been more complicated. With new federal regulations directed at the fiduciary role of plan advisors, it is easy to see why advisors are focusing on compliance issues, often at the expense of client service.

That’s why many plan advisors are partnering with R.T. Jones Capital Equities Management, a Registered Investment Advisor. The firm specializes in delivering time-tested wealth management solutions for participants – while mitigating regulatory risk to plan advisor and sponsor through its managed account product, Artesys®.

Extensive Fiduciary Protection

With Artesys, R.T. Jones plays an important role as a plan fiduciary. The Department of Labor (DOL) has designated the Managed Account as an option to provide financial safe harbors and liability protection to plan advisors and sponsors through two ERISA designations. As a 3(38) Investment Manager, it takes discretion, authority and control of participants’ assets for adherence to portfolio objectives and risk levels. As a 3(21) Investment Advisor, R.T. Jones serves as a co-fiduciary to the plan sponsor. R.T. Jones also offers portfolios that satisfy the DOL’s Qualified Default Investment Alternative, or QDIA, criteria.

Proven Professional Management

R.T. Jones has over 10 years of proven performance with its offensive and defensive investment management approach. A dedicated staff conducts market analyses and reviews and reallocates portfolios using a proven quantitative investment management discipline. As a managed account manager, Artesys augments advisors’ offerings and provides them with services and capabilities that help them stand out among clients and differentiate themselves from competitors. In addition, the firm doesn’t sell investment products or collect 12b-1 mutual fund fees.

Education: Upfront and Ongoing

Artesys’ personalized retirement evaluation tool, “Plot Me,” helps advisors’ clients better understand the relationship between risk and return. Through performance updates, Artesys reinforces the relationship between portfolio performance and the level of risk so participants can reach their retirement goals. This level of communication also helps address the plan sponsor’s ERISA education requirements.

“Never before has it been as important that everyone play to their strengths,” said Robert T. Jones, Chairman and CEO of R.T. Jones. “We developed Artesys to help advisors focus on what they do best by focusing on what we do best – helping plan participants realize their goals.”

Many financial advisors agree. Total assets under management for R.T. Jones have grown by 238 percent from March 31, 2011, to March 31, 2012.

R&F Financial Advisors Connect the Dots Between Wealth and Life

ICreating confident investors is the idea behind R&F Financial Group’s approach to building financial strategies. “It’s not unusual for potential clients to feel overwhelmed with the number of their existing investments, unsure they are getting an optimal return, and anxious about what they’ve seen in the media,” says R&F Senior Partner Brian Roberts, CFS. “They are often surprised when we turn the conversation away from financial affairs and ask them one question: What in life matters to you most?”

“Beating the indices is always important, but nothing trumps the confidence of knowing you are making decisions based on reliable financial information that relates specifically to your personal issues and objectives,” explains Senior Partner Mike Fleming, CFP®, CLU, ChFC. “The more we can understand about you, the better we can serve you.”

R&F’s clients run the gamut from families wanting a coordinated financial plan, to business owners seeking creative company benefits solutions, to retirees who need a reliable income stream. The firm serves high-net-worth individuals and others who want to preserve wealth and address the needs of later generations.

Because crafting a solution that meets short-, mid- and long-term financial goals demands the widest range of options, R&F gives individuals access to a wide range of investment options. “We aggressively pursue products and services that make sense for our clients,” says Roberts. “We do not limit them to a diversification model of just
investing in stocks and bonds. Neither do we limit them to defensive measures through insurance. A combination of investments and insurance products allows us to truly customize an effective plan.”

The Personal CFO

Roberts and Fleming offer clients additional services beyond typical financial planning. The Personal CFO concept integrates R&F’s full scope of services: asset management strategies, liability coverage, tax management strategies, retirement planning and estate planning. “In our role as a Personal CFO, we support clients as they make personal and business decisions,” explains Fleming. “We free up time for individuals to be what they enjoy being most – parents, spouses, grandparents and volunteers.”

Effective Investment Strategies
Can Take the Sting Out of Market Swings

In volatile markets, thoughtful financial planning can help counterbalance the emotional roller coaster. “Panic is the enemy of long-term financial plans,” explains Financial Advisor Jason E. Jensen, First Vice President of The Gateway Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. “When building client portfolios, the first task at hand is to prepare for unforeseen circumstances, as well as inevitable life-stage changes. Until these issues are properly addressed and a prudent financial strategy is in place, investors are susceptible to making decisions based on emotions, especially in unpredictable markets.”

Quarterbacking Our Clients’ Teams

Led by Jensen, Wealth Advisor Paul Baeske and Financial Advisor David Elbe, The Gateway Group views the financial needs of each client through a wide lens, while at the same time focusing narrowly on clients’ individual needs, timeline and lifestyle. The group serves a broad range of investors, including owners of small- and mid-sized businesses, individuals nearing retirement, professional athletes and physician groups.

“We function as the quarterback for the investor’s team of trusted advisors,” explains Baeske. “For instance, an effective estate plan needs to consider tax strategies, concerns for second- and third-generation family members, philanthropic goals and more. So we work with our clients’ accountants, attorneys, bankers and other professionals to coordinate all financial services and maintain investment strategies.”

Tailored Solutions

Understanding each client’s goals and objectives is the key to crafting an effective long-term financial plan, says Jensen. “Professional athletes, for example, have unique concerns associated with fame and must factor the possibility of a shortened competitive career into their investment plan.” Elbe’s experience as a small-business owner himself gives him keen insight into business valuation, succession and other issues that are highly significant to this category of investors.

As their financial plans are implemented, The Gateway Group clients enjoy the advantages of access to Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s expansive resources. Through this global leader in wealth management, the group can offer customized products and services that might not be available at boutique practices.

Ultimately, responsive service is The Gateway Group trademark. “Our clients appreciate that we are service driven, not product driven, and they value our advice on a breadth of issues including major purchases or lifestyle decisions,” says Jensen. “We view our group as a personal financial concierge service, supporting and protecting our clients’ best interests with dedication and integrity. This fosters greater confidence, minimizing panic-driven investment decision making.”

John Fagan, CFP® is a marathon runner, and he welcomes clients to the long run.

That’s how he and his colleagues at Fagan Financial Group of Raymond James view investing. It’s an ongoing process, he says, and you have to be disciplined. His understanding of pacing and the long view make him a well-qualified partner for anyone planning for their financial future.

Really, that’s just one thing that qualifies him. Others are his nearly 30 years in the business, his experience as a broker at a major firm, and now his alliance with Raymond James.

That’s a good fit for him, which makes it a good fit for his clients. Fagan, Senior Vice President-Investments for Fagan Financial Group, says Raymond James offers a full complement of products, which he is free to offer as befits the client’s needs. “The firm knows I work for the client,” he says. “So my sole focus is to act in the client’s best interest. What I like about Raymond James is that it truly is client-first.”

Fagan and his team, Financial Advisor Charles M. Fagan, CRPC® and Senior Registered Sales Associate Linda K. Rhoades, get to know their clients and what’s important to them. It’s a four-part process. Part one is meeting with the client to better understand who they are and what they hope to accomplish. “The relationship is important to us,” Fagan says. “We want clients to feel they can ask us anything, financial or otherwise.” Second is analysis of the client’s current financial situation. Part three is Fagan Financial Group’s recommendations, which are tailored to the client’s specific needs and goals. Finally, part four, they continuously monitor the entire portfolio to make sure it’s on track. “Every client is different,” Fagan says, “so every portfolio’s different. We structure it individually for each client.”

The group stays in touch with clients via phone calls, newsletters, its website, quarterly reports and face-to-face meetings. His vast experience assures people that Fagan has seen the spectrum of financial conditions – bull and bear markets, high and low interest rates. “They know I’m going to be there to answer their questions.”

The investment as a long-distance race metaphor is apt. “You’re going to run into hills and you’re going to run into various conditions. Whether it’s hot, cold, windy or rainy, you make adjustments and keep moving forward,” Fagan says. “Reaching your financial goals is similar. There will always be changing economic and market conditions and you make adjustments to stay on track.”
