Building a Better World: Transforming Knowledge Into World-Class Solutions
There’s some debate about who coined the phrase “think globally, act locally.” Some say it was Yoko Ono in 1981. Others say it dates back to 1915 and a city planner from Scotland. Regardless of who said it first, it exemplifies the corporate mindset of MWH Global, a strategic consulting, engineering and construction firm focused on water-related challenges around the world. Its president and CEO, Alan Krause, says the global sharing of knowledge to improve local projects is one of the company’s greatest strengths.
With more than 7,500 employees in 34 countries across six continents,
MWH has considerable knowledge to share. “We network our knowledge and experience; local communities around the world can benefit from the expertise of our entire company,” says Krause. “We’re able to transform knowledge into world – class solutions.”
Protecting One of Our Most Valuable Resources – Water
From repairing damage wrought by natural disasters in Australia and New Zealand, to being the lead technical designer on the expansion of the Panama Canal, and hundreds of other projects at any given time, MWH Global is determined to leave the world a better place.
That’s why the firm specializes in wet infrastructure projects. “Water is a finite, precious resource,” says Krause. “We believe it’s our duty to protect and preserve water by sharing our knowledge on how to use it wisely, how to treat it, how to deliver it, how to work with it.”
MWH’s involvement as the lead designer in the expansion of the Panama Canal is a prime example. In the current lock system, up to 52 million gallons of fresh water are lost to the ocean every time a ship passes through. By applying global expertise in solving complex wet infrastructure challenges, MWH experts designed a system of water-saving basins for the new locks to save and reuse 60 percent of the fresh water, an important advancement in a world eager to conserve freshwater resources. “This design is a first for a project this size,” says Krause. “It required the ultimate in teamwork, talent and global knowledge. And MWH is delivering on all counts.”
