South Texas Brain & Spine

Corpus Christi Home to
World-Class Center for Neurological Disorders

With the opening of South Texas Brain & Spine Center in Corpus Christi in 2008, some of the most sophisticated advances in the field of neurosurgery are now easily accessible to patients in the Coastal Bend of Texas. “We are able to treat diseases and injuries of the brain and spine previously considered inoperable, and most patients are returning home rapidly with little discomfort,” explains board-certified neurosurgeon Mathew T. Alexander, M.D.

Dr. Alexander began practicing in Corpus Christi in 2004 after completing his general surgery internship at the Medical College of Georgia (including nine years under renowned neurosurgeon Sanford J. Larson) and a neurosurgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is the Chair of Surgery and Neurosurgery at all Spohn Health System hospitals. Dr. Alexander is joined by Langham Gleason, M.D. at South Texas Brain & Spine, a comprehensive adult neurosurgery practice and the only Level II Trauma adult neurosurgery center in the area.

South Texas Brain & Spine is a leader in minimally invasive spine surgery to remove tumors, place artificial discs, and treat spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and vertebral fractures. “Patients experience fuller and quicker recovery because the muscles around the spine are not pulled away as they would be during traditional surgery. For many who require spinal fusion to correct certain conditions such as broken vertebrae, spinal deformity, spinal weakness, spinal instability or chronic low back pain, their procedure may be able to be done on an outpatient basis, and often they are back to work in a week,” says Dr. Alexander, who uses stem cell therapy to encourage faster healing after spinal fusion.

Dr. Alexander and his team have introduced state-of-the-art treatments for tumors, anomalies and diseases that affect any part of the nervous system. For example, Dr. Alexander performed the first artificial joint replacement in the state. Christus Spohn Shoreline recently purchased a CyberKnife, a noninvasive, high-energy radiation treatment tool that precisely targets metastatic lesions without incisions. In addition, Spohn has installed a world-class Brainlab. The lab’s computer-assisted imaging technology allows Dr. Alexander to “see” the actual position of the surgical instruments and any changes in the location of tumor tissue while the patient is in the operating room, minimizing the need for repeat surgery.

South Texas Brain & Spine is also a leader in deep brain stimulation, a highly effective treatment for intractable symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, as well as peripheral nerve surgery like carpal tunnel surgery, the placement of pain pumps/stimulators to treat chronic pain, and kyphoplasty.

“This highly complex medical field is continually advancing,” says Dr. Alexander. “We’re committed to staying on the cutting edge.”
